SEEING THEM AS THE GROOVERS OF THEIR DAY
I know it's very basic, but for the first time, I saw the connection between self-portraits and selfie photos. I looked at a number of self-portraits and thought - "This is how you want to be perceived. This is how you want to be remembered." This was my ah-ha moment about 16th-18th Century self-portraits being a very conscious construction of identity for public consumption - I know everyone else got this years ago!! Similarly, I looked at all the action in a Pieter Brueghel painting and realised it was the forerunner of a movie. I also looked at the painting, Liszt at the Piano, and realised it was the Facebook of the day because so many famous people were in it...
